TEAM GB Olympic Cycling Helmet

Visual design for a winning mindset

English Institute for Sport x Crux Product Design
Following Crux’s successful partnership in engineering the record-breaking London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic cycling helmets, EIS returned to re-design the Rio 2016 model. We had designed the fastest cycling helmet in the world, now it was time enhance the user experience.

Athlete psychology was at the forefront of our process. From unboxing to racing, the helmet’s visual language was designed to actively contribute to the athlete's superior performance.

There were three essential elements to the visual design - speed, patriotism and personal pride. To compliment Stella McCartney’s Team GB apparel design, elements from the portfolio were extracted and applied to the helmet design. An iconic ribbon stripe down the center of the helmet was the visual centerpeice, visible to audience members both in the stadium and at home.
